Chapter Five

Alekos

Thasia eyed me suspiciously. “Why aren’t we meeting in your penthouse?”

“I’m having it remodeled.”

My sister hummed. “Why?”

“Well, since I had planned to head down to Lima shortly, but then somebody decided that they intended to take my ticket,” I grumbled with a glare. “You’re back early. Did it blow up in your face? I could always come down with you to smooth things over.”

“That won’t be necessary,” Thasia insisted, holding up a hand.

“Then you’ll be heading back?” I asked, trying to hide the hope from my tone. “Or are you a miracle worker who managed to get a hotel built in less than three weeks?”

“While I’m significantly better than you, I’m not that good,” Thasia scoffed, rolling her eyes. She drummed her fingers against the table, glaring out at the rest of the dinners at the restaurant as if their existences were insults. “I heard word you’ve gone soft — that you’ve found some girl.”

Well, shit. “Am I ever without?”

“No…but you’re not the sort to settle down with one person,” Thasia retorted. Her blue eyes scanned me, reading every little nuance on my face. “Is this one special?”

“Aren’t they all?” I drawled. “Come back another two weeks and ask me again.”

Her eyes narrowed. Clucking her tongue, she grabbed her wine, draining it and pouring another glass. “Antinori is gone, and we took care of the Melendez, but power vacuums can come back to bite you in the ass. You shouldn’t be spending nights outside the Olympia.”

“Yet you can go to Lima?”

“I’m older,” Thasia scoffed, smirking into her drink. “And I’m a woman. Expendable.”

Gritting my teeth at the idea that my daughter might one day be made to feel the same, I growled, “You aren’t.”

It was a mistake. Her eyes sparked in interest, and leaning forward at this sign of weakness, my sister grinned. “A feminist then?”

“I’ve never thought you were expendable,” I admitted, acting like it was nothing.

Thasia would never believe me. She had never believed me. We were put against each other — measured against each other, and to our father, tying with a woman was losing. I had to obliterate her at every comparison, destroy her each and every time or I was nothing. I killed. I proved myself. Earned by position as his heir again and again, and she accepted, growling almost rabid in his constant rejection until she just didn’t care who she had to kill — what she had to tear down of mine to get his attention, for better or for worse. Whatever monstrousness I saw in her, our father created, and I fed.

“Well, I’ll be back to Lima before the end of the week. If your lady does stick around by the time I’m back, I expect a formal introduction,” Tasia informed, emptying the last of the bottle into her glass. She swirled the red wine, letting it almost tip over the edge before she took a sip. Her eyes never left me.

After she departed, I returned to the work of the penthouse, studying the nursery that stood now across from the master bedroom.
