Chapter Five
Alekos
Thasia eyed me suspiciously. âWhy arenât we meeting in your penthouse?â
âIâm having it remodeled.â
My sister hummed. âWhy?â
âWell, since I had planned to head down to Lima shortly, but then somebody decided that they intended to take my ticket,â I grumbled with a glare. âYouâre back early. Did it blow up in your face? I could always come down with you to smooth things over.â
âThat wonât be necessary,â Thasia insisted, holding up a hand.
âThen youâll be heading back?â I asked, trying to hide the hope from my tone. âOr are you a miracle worker who managed to get a hotel built in less than three weeks?â
âWhile Iâm significantly better than you, Iâm not that good,â Thasia scoffed, rolling her eyes. She drummed her fingers against the table, glaring out at the rest of the dinners at the restaurant as if their existences were insults. âI heard word youâve gone soft â that youâve found some girl.â
Well, shit. âAm I ever without?â
âNoâ¦but youâre not the sort to settle down with one person,â Thasia retorted. Her blue eyes scanned me, reading every little nuance on my face. âIs this one special?â
âArenât they all?â I drawled. âCome back another two weeks and ask me again.â
Her eyes narrowed. Clucking her tongue, she grabbed her wine, draining it and pouring another glass. âAntinori is gone, and we took care of the Melendez, but power vacuums can come back to bite you in the ass. You shouldnât be spending nights outside the Olympia.â
âYet you can go to Lima?â
âIâm older,â Thasia scoffed, smirking into her drink. âAnd Iâm a woman. Expendable.â
Gritting my teeth at the idea that my daughter might one day be made to feel the same, I growled, âYou arenât.â
It was a mistake. Her eyes sparked in interest, and leaning forward at this sign of weakness, my sister grinned. âA feminist then?â
âIâve never thought you were expendable,â I admitted, acting like it was nothing.
Thasia would never believe me. She had never believed me. We were put against each other â measured against each other, and to our father, tying with a woman was losing. I had to obliterate her at every comparison, destroy her each and every time or I was nothing. I killed. I proved myself. Earned by position as his heir again and again, and she accepted, growling almost rabid in his constant rejection until she just didnât care who she had to kill â what she had to tear down of mine to get his attention, for better or for worse. Whatever monstrousness I saw in her, our father created, and I fed.
âWell, Iâll be back to Lima before the end of the week. If your lady does stick around by the time Iâm back, I expect a formal introduction,â Tasia informed, emptying the last of the bottle into her glass. She swirled the red wine, letting it almost tip over the edge before she took a sip. Her eyes never left me.
After she departed, I returned to the work of the penthouse, studying the nursery that stood now across from the master bedroom.
